Walt Nauta, longtime aide and body man for former President Donald Trump, will appear for his third arraignment on Thursday after two delays as he sought to obtain legal counsel.
Nauta, 40, delayed his arraignment twice as he worked to obtain local counsel in Florida, where the indictments for both him and Trump came out of in mid-June. Trump pleaded not guilty in special counsel Jack Smith’s classified documents investigation two weeks before Nauta's first appearance. The aide is facing six counts relating to conspiracy to obstruct justice and making false statements.
Prosecutors allege that Nauta moved boxes containing classified documents around Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, which was raided by the FBI in August 2022. The raid led to the discovery of hundreds of documents, some marked"top secret" or"confidential," that were believed to have all been given back to the federal government.
In a less-redacted affidavit for the raid released early Thursday morning, Nauta was revealed as"Witness 5" and allegedly shown on surveillance footage shuffling boxes similar to those carrying classified documents from the storage room where they were held to an unknown location.Nauta worked in the White House during the Trump administration and was promoted to senior chief culinary specialist, according to Navy records. He enlisted in the Navy in 2001.
After Trump left the White House in January 2021, Nauta left the Navy and continued to work for the former president. He became Trump's executive assistant and personal aide in August 2021, according to the federal indictment.
