The trainer was attacked during a live show at Miami Seaquarium in an incident recorded on video.
. The video shows the dolphin, named Sundance, violently attack the trainer several times before the trainer was able to swim to safety.that the trainer accidentally scratched Sundance with her hand during the show, likely upsetting the dolphin.
“This was undoubtedly painful to Sundance...,” the Seaquarium said in a statement to the Herald. “The collision between Sundance and the trainer was something that has never happened before to either of them.” Local 10 reports the Seaquarium has come under scrutiny in the past, with the USDA releasing a report last year saying it found “numerous” violations. Last month, the facility’s new owners said it would no longer have shows featuring Lolita, a 56-year-old orca, under an agreement with federal regulators. Lolita continues to live in an aging tank at the facility.
“PETA urges this abusement park to end its exploitation of dolphins by getting them to sanctuaries as quickly as possible, so that they’d never be used in tawdry shows again and no one else would get hurt,” the statement says.
