“I never bet on baseball or any other sport,” Shohei Ohtani said Monday afternoon, when he addressed the scandal for the first time.
star said he was “saddened” and “shocked” by the recent gambling revelations by his one-time trusted interpreter and confidant, Ippei Mizuhara, and denied making illegal bets on sports or ever paying money to an illegal bookmaker. “I’ve never bet on baseball or any other sports or never have asked someone to do it on my behalf,” Ohtani said Monday afternoon when he addressed the scandal for the first time. “I have never through a bookmaker to bet on sports.
The Los Angeles Times first reported that Ohtani’s name appeared on wire transfers to alleged bookmaker Mathew Bowyer, who is under federal investigation. The amount totaled at least $4.5 million, ESPN reported. Mizuhara has claimed the transfers covered his debts. Mizuhara offered conflicting accounts to ESPN last week. In his first interview, he outlined how Ohtani, despite his distaste for gambling, loaned Mizuhara money once Ohtani learned about the problem.
