Documents reveal how the Peter Thiel-backed startup Anduril is using AI and an army of data labelers under NDAs to build a virtual border wall for the Biden administration
relies on an army of"human image labelers" operating under nondisclosure agreements that prevent them from knowing what they're working on, documents obtained via public-records request reveal.
The startup is running dozens of solar-powered 30-foot surveillance towers and drones that scour southern, northern, and maritime borders of the US. As a part of their work for Anduril, workers' tasks could include assigning a label to an object in an image from surveillance footage, like"person" or"animal," or determining whether the label that Anduril automatically assigned was correct. They are also training the software to do the labeling automatically.
"Human image-labeling is critical to the computer vision component of the system to ensure consistent performance," reads one CBP document obtained by Insider. It also states that Anduril is authorized to"use images to train artificial intelligence algorithms" either on its own or using a third-party company, with permission from CBP.
