A nearly century-old Disney horror movie was highly rated by animation insiders in the 1990s, and the spooky jaunt even beat 1941's Superman.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Disney played an instrumental role in the history of animation, and one often overlooked horror movie was among its most influential cartoons ― even beating the classic 1941 Superman animation in a 1994 poll. At a time when Disney was associated with the cheerfully whistling Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie, it was surprising the studio took a chance on a spooky subject.
The fact that Disney's spooky short outdid Superman in a poll is a testament to its quality and popularity. Not only did 1941's Fleischer Studios Superman cartoon influence the style of later Man of Steel portrayals and lay the framework for his motto "Truth, justice, and the American way," but it was even nominated for an Oscar.
Disney's 1929 Short The Skeleton Dance Was Voted The 18th Best Cartoon Of All Time Disney's horror cartoon The Skeleton Dance sees skeletons climbing out of their graves ― terrifying the graveyard's animals ― to dance, play cats as violins, and topple and rebuild each other. It came in at number 18 in animation historian Jerry Beck's 1994 book The 50 Greatest Cartoons: As Selected by 1,000 Animation Professionals .
Why The Skeleton Dance Was So Revolutionary For Disney The Skeleton Dance may seem more quaint than scary today, but at the time it was released, it caused a stir — even with its humorous content. Variety's original review for the short Disney movie suggested that parents might not want to bring their children, though it did concede that a scene wherein "one skeleton plays the spine of another in xylophone fashion" was a "peak.
The Skeleton Dance was also revolutionary in a different way. Synchronized audio and animation was a new technique at the time, and the horror short perfected it. Composer Carl Stalling came up with a click track system, using the frames of the cartoon to form a beat that musicians could follow. The first of Disney's Silly Symphonies series, The Skeleton Dance paved the way for music and animation to work together.
