'Many of us have long asked, fought for, and have been denied these reasonable accommodations, and have even lost jobs as a result.' –DCampoamor

. I take immunosuppressants to manage the discomfort and minimize the damage to my joints, so I'm more susceptible to infections and the effects are much more serious. With my disability, I'm always at some level of pain, especially [when] moving around, so when my pain is high or my joints are too stiff to move, I need to be able to work from home. It's key to me being able to earn a living and contribute my bit to society.

I love my freelance clients, but the instability of freelance work is incredibly stressful, especially when coupled up with a disability. I only book up a few months in advance, I have to get my own health insurance, etc. I'm a skilled editor and great at time management, so with a little accommodation from a publisher, I believe I would be a great addition to their team, and it's frustrating to not be given that chance or consideration.

Watching these accommodations become available in a wide-spread way so quickly has been really painful. It hurts not only because I could have benefited from accommodations like this throughout my education, but because there are so many others who could have benefited, or were forced to drop out of school, or quit their jobs because their school or employer told them they were impossible to accommodate.

Seeing the accommodations provided around COVID-19 has been heartbreaking. I [believe] that it wasn't the level of difficulty of the accommodations I was requesting: it was that these institutions didn't want to provide them. We are worthless to them because of these supposed defects. They treat us as disposable and our health negotiable, then ask us to support these decisions. I do! But not knowing that I was the inconvenience, not the request.
