William Whitebear, 28, was found unresponsive in his cell at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre on Nov. 2, 2020.
, jurors heard that Whitebear, on remand, had been admitted to the jail on Oct. 31, 2020. A Saskatoon Police Service investigator testified Whitebear had threatened suicide in a call to his girlfriend before his death and that a note was found on Whitebear during the autopsy.
Alisha Paproski, a correctional officer who responded to the “code blue” arrived at Whitebear’s cell to find Nguyen doing chest compressions and she took over. She said an automated external defibrillator was present and that Matyjanka had torn Whitebear’s shirt open with the 911 knife. In the afternoon, jurors heard from the jail’s director, Pat Sommervill, that the Saskatoon jail doesn’t have an in-centre psychologist, but it does have a contract physician, psychiatrist and dentist and the medical unit makes referrals to a contract doctor.
