Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia left the Democratic Party to become an independent on Friday, sparking speculation that Democrats will lose their slim majority in the upper chamber.To commemorate the event, Manchin posted a photo of himself officially registering as an independent on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday and wrote: 'My commitment to do everything I can to bring our country together has led me to register as an independent with no party affiliation.
To stay true to myself and remain committed to put country before party, I have decided to register as an independent with no party affiliation and continue to fight for America's sensible majority.'Newsweek reached out to Manchin's office via email for comment.Before Manchin left the party, the Senate was made up of 49 Republicans and 48 Democrats. However, Democrats have control because of the three independent senators who caucus with the Democrats.
