The Diamondbacks are shifting Corbin Martin into a relief role, and the very early returns at Salt River Fields have been intriguing.
Right-hander Corbin Martin opened eyes with an impressive live batting practice session on Thursday, providing hope the Diamondbacks could still recoup some value out of the pitcher they viewed as the centerpiece of the Zack Greinke trade four years ago.
Since joining the Diamondbacks, Martin has struggled both to stay healthy and pitch effectively. When he was acquired, along with three other players, from the Houston Astros in July 2019, he had recently undergone Tommy John surgery. That and other injuries pushed back his Diamondbacks debut to 2021. His results, both in the big leagues and the minors over the past two seasons, have been so-so at best.
“So far, I feel like health-wise, it might be the best decision,” he said. “Not overtaxing, being able to go out there and focus on the three outs to get every inning. I think that’s going to be the major key and what I’m looking for. Being able to build off that is going to be able to help me in the long run.”“So far, in the lives and the bullpens, the ball is coming out really well and I feel healthy,” Martin said.
