Caroll's film debut was as a co-star in 1954'sopposite fellow pioneer Dorothy Dandridge, but she notably broke barriers in 1968 as the titular character inShe played the first Black female non-stereotypical role in television history, starring as the professional nurse Julia Baker until 1971.
