“You go to a birthday party, you don’t go thinking someone’s going to shoot it up. And you don’t go expecting violence. It’s a kid’s birthday party.”
Details of what led to the violence remained unclear Monday. Oakland police were called at about 9:45 p.m. to a duplex in the 900 block of Apgar Street in North Oakland, on a residential street running between Market Street and West MacArthur Boulevard, authorities said. The Sotelo Garcia brothers were the oldest of six siblings. They would often help their mother, a single parent, in raising their brothers — the youngest of whom is 3. While Angel would accompany his mother on errands, for example, Jazy would usually stay home to watch over the other kids, Melani Garcia said.
Angel was more outgoing and had voiced ambitions of one day transforming his love for drawing and art into a career as an architect.
