FORT WORTH — At the core of Sonny Dykes, the football coach, is a person who didn’t want to move. The son of a former high school and college coach, Dykes...
Leaving SMU wasn’t an easy move for Dykes, but moving to Fort Worth offered the opportunity to revive a program at the highest level of college football.
It’s been roughly nine months since Dykes coached his final game at SMU. It was an overcast November day shrouded in the news that had been rumored for weeks and confirmed the night before. He was making the rare move from one school directly to its rival. He’s open about it now. That day wasn’t easy. The exit — a weeks-long process — was complicated. But it led him to TCU, to an office overlooking Amon G. Carter Stadium.
There was, however, instability on another level. When realignment happened last year, and SMU wasn’t, Dykes said it was worrisome. The bottom line in college football, he said, is to win and have the capability to win at the highest level. Being unsure what would happen from a conference standpoint, Dykes insinuated that bottom line was threatened.
That Friday, Dykes and his team did what they always do before a home game the next day. They got on buses headed toward a hotel. That’s when the news broke that Dykes was going to be TCU’s next head coach. Dykes hadn’t told his team, but later that night he had to address it. Dykes believes the timing wasn’t an accident, saying “SMU people” leaked the news of his departure to “ESPN,” and other media members to “stick it” to him.
“I have incredibly fond memories of my time at SMU,” Dykes said, adding that it’s never easy breaking up. “Didn’t have particularly fond memories of the way it ended. But you know, you move on. You move on from the good and you move on from the bad.”Originally, the Dykes family thought they would move at the end of last school year, but they decided to move up the date to February. Even before that, Dykes said he would stay in the back house of a friend’s property close to campus.
