“Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy” uses a kaleidoscopic method to explore the cultural impact of the 1970 Oscar winner.

, was attracted to the exotic new world he encountered in “Midnight Cowboy,” James Leo Herlihy’s 1965 novel. The director was gay, and set his first American film on the edge of the scene that revolved around Andy Warhol, producer of such queer-themed movies as “Heat” and, yes, “Lonesome Cowboys.” Neither of the central characters in “Midnight Cowboy” is identified as gay, but a sex scene involving two men led to the film’s being released with an X rating.

Details of Schlesinger’s youth are sketched from multiple sources, mostly provided by the author Ian Buruma, Schlesinger’s nephew. Layered into the impressionistic mix are Schlesinger family home movies and excerpts from Buruma’s audio interviews with his uncle. Buruma is also one of the documentary’s principal interviewees, alongside “Midnight Cowboy” star Jon Voight and supporting actors Jennifer Salt and Bob Balaban.

They also contribute to the film’s analysis of the generational shift from tough-guy actors like John Wayne to vulnerable performers such as Hoffman and Voight. Amid clips of everything from “Apocalypse Now,” “Easy Rider,” “Mean Streets” and “Across 110th Street” to “The Sound of Music,” Buirski presents “Midnight Cowboy” as both an indicator and an instigator of social change.

Obliquely but evocatively, “Desperate Souls” ponders the many roles of the cowboy: gay icon, cinematic hero and symbol of American manifest destiny from the Rockies to the Mekong. Yet the documentary acknowledges that neither Schlesinger’s film nor its era could change everything. At the same Academy Awards ceremony where “Midnight Cowboy” won three Oscars, the best actor statuette was awarded to John Wayne. At the AFI Silver.
