Apple is testing the use of the printers to make parts of some coming smart watches, according to Bloomberg.
Stocks of 3D printer makers were on the rise Wednesday following a report that said Apple is testing the use of the equipment to make certain devices.
According to a Bloomberg report citing people with the knowledge of the matter, the company is testing the printers as a way to make parts of some coming Apple Watches. This would be a shift from the method Apple has used in the past, which involves cutting metal into the shape needed. The new method of 3D printing the parts—Bloomberg said the technology could be used to make the steel chassis—would save time and use less material, the report said. The report didn’t name specific companies that Apple might work with, but 3D printing stocks were higher in mid afternoon. 3D Systems was up 7.8% to $6.61, Desktop Metal surged 15% to $1.84, Stratasys jumped 3.4% to $14.49, and the American depositary receipts of Voxeljet were 2.6% higher at $1.20.

The new Apple Watches might feature 3D-printed parts.A new Bloomberg report says Apple is tinkering with 3D printing for the stainless steel version of the Apple Watch Series 9. The main goal is to purportedly streamline production, and if things go well, Apple may consider using 3D printing for its other products. The report claims that Apple’s been secretly developing this tech for three years, but it’s not a given that the first Series 9 shipments will actually feature the tech. Earlier in June, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo noted that some of the Ultra 2’s titanium parts would also be manufactured via 3D printing. (Bloomberg says this won’t happen until 2024, however.) Ultimately this would be a small number of Apple Watches sold. Most people opt for the less expensive aluminum models, with stainless steel making up roughly 10 percent of total units.
