Refereeing analyst Dermot Gallagher has given his opinion on the decision not to award Leeds United a penalty for a challenge on Wilfried Gnonto against Norwich City
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has given his verdict on the Leeds United penalty claim against Norwich City on Sunday. Wilfried Gnonto went down in the first half of the clash at Carrow Road, although the referee quickly waved play on.
Despite the Whites settling for a goalless draw, the story could have been very different. Italian winger Gnonto beat Borja Sainz down the right wing and then proceeded to be pulled back and tripped by the Norwich winger. Contact began outside the box and appeared to continue into it before referee Josh Smith signalled for the game to continue.Speaking to Sky Sports regarding the incident in the latter stages of the second half, Gallagher has given his verdict on the decision.
“If he thinks it's a lower-body challenge, free-kick. If somebody goes with a trip, is where is, but if someone pulls and pushes… it all depends on whether he's watching the ball or the feet. Referees tend to watch for a trip and if he thinks it's a trip, he'll go for a free-kick but he genuinely believes the Norwich player plays it.”
