Researchers at the Cleveland Clinic have developed a new screening tool that detects problems with memory and cognition in older adults at significantly earlier stages.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — , demonstrated that when the screening was included as a part of regular visits with primary care doctors, it was capable of identifying patients with mild memory loss that might otherwise be missed.

The result is that memory problems are typically underdiagnosed, and most diagnoses occur at later stages of disease. Doctors believe that by identifying memory impairments sooner they will be able to help patients implement changes to slow or delay onset of the disease. In the study, nearly all of patients over age 65 were able to complete the unsupervised computerized tests and the tool identified 90% of patients already diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. By comparison, a common screening tool currently used in primary care clinical practice identified only 45%.

“As the population ages and the incidence of Alzheimer’s and other dementias increases rapidly, it is critical that we find new ways to identify the disease early,”lead author of the study and director of the Schey Center for Cognitive Neuroimaging at Cleveland Clinic said in the hospital’s announcement.
