There was a strange codicil to the announcement. If ENO would consider relocating, perhaps to Manchester, then the company might be eligible for a one-off £17m grant to help with the move which, by the way, must start within the next 20 weeks. Since last Friday’s statement more details have emerged. Not only did ENO’s board and management not know what was coming until 24 hours before, but it was the first either they or the Greater Manchester Authority had heard of the proposed relocation.
20 weeks to move a business whose schedules are locked in years in advance, with over 300 highly specialised staff on the payroll: no warning, no discussion, no plan, certainly no costings or assessments.
The numbers are big – they usually are with opera. The “total artform” that, at its best, combines design and dance and music and words into an all-consuming, full-body experience, doesn’t come cheap. Far better, Arts Council England have argued, to cut one company entirely than maim hundreds. And, in aThe ENO’s staging of Philip Glass’s Akhnaten . Opera is an indulgence for metropolitan moneybags, a porcelain dinner service when most of us are worrying where the food’s going to come from.
