Northern Ireland take on Romania in Bucharest on Friday evening
Boss Michael O'Neill has revealed the Sunderland defender has been ruled out of the game in Bucharest after becoming a father for the first time. O'Neill though is hopeful that Ballard could return to the squad for Tuesday's game against Scotland.
Jamal Lewis and Ross McCausland could also be back in the group after injury for the game at Hampden Park. “Both Ross and Jamal have gone back to their clubs for treatment, but hopefully they will join up with us when we arrive in Scotland for the second game,” the Northern Ireland boss said. With a number of experienced stars still unavailable for selection O'Neill once again must blood the young players. But he pointed out what they may lack in experience they make up for in potential.
“I think we in our group that have never been capped or are in single figures in caps so they are at the very start of their international careers. “A lot of them are at the start of their club careers as well. I think this is a new team that’s being developed. We really only have what I would say are four experienced players with us and this team has a lot of potential but it needs time.”
