Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin's campaign for governor came to an end Tuesday night, finishing third in the Republican primary race.
Downstate lawmaker Darren Bailey easily won the Republican nomination for governor Tuesday, with Irvin appearing to finish third behind Jesse Sullivan in the six-candidate race to face incumbent Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker in the November election.According to unofficial results as of Wednesday afternoon, Irvin received about 15% of the vote statewide.
In Kane County, Irvin got a little over 19% of the vote, compared to 47.5% for Bailey and 15.5% for Sullivan. In Will County, Irvin received a little over 15% of the vote, with Bailey getting 57.7% and Sullivan almost 16% of the ballots. “Tonight, J.B. Pritzker won the Republican primary for governor here in Illinois. He spent a historic amount of money to pick his own Republican opponent in the general election,” Irvin said. “Listen, I wish Darren Bailey well as he moves on to the general election. I wish him well. And listen, I hope the governor is wrong in his assessment that he can easily defeat the opponent he paid tens of millions of dollars to face.
