How an AI breakthrough from Alphabet's DeepMind 'changed scientific history' and could lead to new cures

"AlphaFold, amazing as it, is just the beginning," Demis Hassabis, the CEO of DeepMind, said on a podcast last year.In 2016, DeepMind's artificial-intelligence system beat a world-class player at the board game Go.Nearly all of today's medicines target proteins, and knowing their shapes is key to learning more about diseases and how to stop them.Traditionally, researchers crystallized the protein, turning it into a salty form that some proteins notoriously resist.
Hassabis turned his attention to proteins in 2016, the year his DeepMind AI program surged into the public consciousness byA child chess prodigy and AI evangelist, Hassabis started DeepMind in 2010 with the goal of building AI systems that could perform certain tasks as well as humans could, or better. After the Go victory, Hassabis and David Silver, a top scientist at DeepMind,Decades of work by the biologist John Moult paved the way for DeepMind's entry into biology.
A few months before the CASP results were announced, John Jumper, one of the top scientists behind AlphaFold, met with his team to map out incremental improvements to the technology. Hassabis unexpectedly stopped by to challenge them.
