The Journal’s ongoing series on debt in America examines how families are taking on more debt to maintain a middle class lifestyle. Stagnant wages, paired with rising cost, mean many people are turning to loans or credit for once-affordable purchases such as a car or a sweater. A record number of Americans making six figures now rent, instead of own, their homes.
Behind the trillions of dollars of consumer debt are our own personal stories of debt. Some may feel optimistic about paying it off, while for others it may color every financial decision they make.
