Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips, who has flirted with challenging President Biden in the Democratic primary, officially announced his longshot bid in a video posted late Thursday night.— and is now centering his campaign launch on the message that he can deliver a fresh alternative to voters who have tired of the president. On Friday, Phillips is expected to appear in front of the New Hampshire State House, where candidates traditionally file for the presidential primary, to give a speech. The announcement comes a day after a Gallup pollBiden’s approval rating had dropped to 37 percent, down 11 percentage points among voters in his own party, a low for Biden among Democrats.
But the state’s unsanctioned primary, held on Feb. 6, creates an opening for Phillips early in the nomination calendar. The first Democratic primary will be held in South Carolina on Feb. 3, followed by the primaries in New Hampshire and Nevada. Phillips has voted consistently with Biden, and it remains unclear what his message would be to voters about how he distinguishes himself from his party’s leader.
