Phillips's comments come as Biden receives historically low approval ratings for his presidency. He also has narrow leads in some key battleground states and slightly falls behind in others, which could cost him reelection in 2024. An Emerson College poll from Aug. 4 showed Biden and Trump deadlocked at 44% in Michigan.
Phillips clarified that he does not think Biden is incapable of running for a second term, but people need to"look at the data." Phillips acknowledged that his"unpopular" opinion is usually only discussed behind closed doors, stating that he believes Democrats are afraid to speak up in support of alternative Democratic presidential candidates for fear of a loss to Republicans and former President Donald Trump.
