Two EncroChat dealers involved in separate multi-million pound drug supply plots were linked together through the brokering of a handgun.
Inside they found £100,000, half a kilo of cocaine, a money counter, vacuum sealer and expensive items including jewellery and golf clubs. Investigations into his EncroChat activity revealed that between November 17 2019 and May 28 2020 Rushworth stayed in contact with 21 other operators regarding the sale of 178kg of cannabis worth over £2.8m and another one and a half kg of cocaine.
The handgun never exchanged hands however and the crown's conspiracy to sell/transfer a prohibited weapon count related to the brief messages between the pair. Defence barrister Frank Dillon, representing Barton, told the court how the defendant never had possession of the firearm and had made a "foolish decision to mention it" to Rushworth.
Mr Dillon added his client is a family man with four children who have stood by him despite his offending. He added Barton, who has served two considerable prison stretches for drug offences in previous years, had faced up to his criminality and would be a "better and wiser man" once he served his sentence.
Finally, Mr Parry-Jones said Rushworth had found the time he was on remand difficult and had waited since October last year to be sentenced. The sentencing delay was due to Barton's extradition from Holland. Mr Parry-Jones added Rushworth's partner and parents, who supported him in court, did not approve of his behaviour but stood by him.
