The bodies were discovered only after the couple was reported missing and their dog was found dead.
The bodies of two pedestrians apparently struck by a car lay near a San Luis Obispo roadside for more than a day before a photo of their missing dog sent police officers back to the scene.
Excessive speed was thought to be a factor, police said, but the driver was not suspected of alcohol or drug impairment. The car was towed; the driver was not detained. Then, around 9:45 p.m., police received a missing-persons report: A San Luis Obispo couple had failed to show up as expected in Modesto. Family members provided photos of the couple and their dog — and a dispatcher made the connection between the pet and the animal found below the bridge.
