The Foreign Secretary is facing questions from his predecessor as Tory leader over a leaked document that appeared to show the UK had secretly softened its stance on Chinese businesses
A Whitehall assessment advised ministers that the Government would be pausing any consideration of sanctions against Chinese firms “indefinitely”, according to internal Cabinet documents seen byhas repeatedly said elements of the documents are “incorrect” and stated that they have “never ruled out sanctions designations on any individual or entity”.
Speaking after a meeting with his Australian counterpart Penny Wong, the Foreign Secretary said the UK “always stand up for our values and speak very clearly” before turning attention to sanctions against Russia. The Foreign Secretary’s denial sets him on a collision course with his predecessor as Tory leader, who is demanding answers from the Government.: “I have seen this document, I can verify its existence, I can verify the words I used in the House of Commons and any statement by the Government that it doesn’t exist is false.”
