David Beckham has recalled how he went from zero to hero after being handed the shirt number once worn by Manchester United legends including George Best.
But when he returned to pre-season training that summer, Fergie gave him the news that left him both elated and nervous.Beckham told the Sky documentary, 'The United Way': "The boss said., 'We're signing Teddy Sheringham and he is going to take the number 10 shirt'. I was like, 'boss, I want to keep the number 10 shirt. Can I keep it?'."I was devastated about it for the whole summer. Then I went back into pre-season and the manager pulled me into his office.
