We chat with DaveOnFXX executive producer James Shin about his work on the show, the uniqueness of its creative vision, and the epic cameo he’d like to see:
FX’s Dave is set to return for a third season, promising more of the hilarity, hijinks, and heart that has catapulted the series into success. Dave debuted in 2020, offering a fictionalized version of the life of internet sensation Lil Dicky as he navigated the rise of his music career. The at-times hyper-specific and shockingly honest nature of the series hit home in ways both humorous and emotional, which helped Dave become FX’s most-watched comedy series ever.
You're an executive producer on the series; that can mean a lot of different things. I'd love to know how you fit into this show as it came together. [We were also] making sure that room felt inclusive and represented, because the world Dave lives in is not just a lot of Daves. It's the world of rap; it's the world of people who are struggling, and trying to make it. In that world, it's a wide diaspora of people sizes and shapes. We wanted to really represent that, and so we helped him with that, and [we try to] kind of remind that we should be building a creative contingent like that.
There's a period of time where he's really focused on writing his album in real life, how to enact that into reality, and the struggles of going through that. Then the daily hijinks that he encounters through that experience, and obviously, tours and stuff, I think that is just constantly feeding him inspiration, and gives the show a lot to work with.
Is there somebody that is a reach that maybe in a season four or five you'd want to get? Or somebody that you really wanted to get that just wasn't possible for one reason or another? You've worked with Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Dave... As part of SB projects, you're helping all of these people translate to film and television. What are the biggest challenges in making sure that these amazing musical artists come across well in other media?
