Cogan’s claims mark the latest salvo in a growing legal battle between victims of the blaze — California’s largest of 2022 — and PacifiCorp, which provides power to nearly 2…

The daughter of a man killed nearly a month ago in the McKinney Fire filed a lawsuit against a local utility company this week, claiming that one of the company’s power lines sparked the inferno that left four people dead and scores of people homeless.

Another lawsuit filed last week against Pacific Power by a different group of McKinney Fire victims made similar claims — marking at least the second time in the last few years that the company has faced legal action after a deadly fire. In 2020, the Slater Fire killed two people, consumed more than 150,000 acres and devastated the community of Happy Camp, which attorneys claimed was due to further negligence by Pacific Power.

In its report, Pacific Power’s parent company did not specifically say that it suspected its lines caused the fire, but said it was is reporting the incident “out of an abundance of caution,” noting that it had a 12,500 volt distribution circuit in the area. Four people died, including John Cogan. He had lived alongside the Klamath River for decades, having inherited land and a home on it from his mother. It allowed him to bask in the quiet pleasure of retirement in a remote and wild area of the state — one where people often seek refuge during retirement.

But the fire exploded later that day — hopping ridgelines and the river and forcing residents to scramble for their lives up Highway 96. Marchetti-Perreault said she didn’t have time to grab any of her belongings when a tornadic storm of smoke, embers and flame hit the property. “He’s like ‘This is everything, it’s my world. I’m going to stay here and fight the fire and do whatever I can to survive,'” Marchetti-Perreault said. “Next thing I knew, everything was on fire.”
