In Star Trek: The Next Generation, Data possesses a positronic brain, but what does this Isaac Asimov coined term even mean?
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The android Lt. Commander Data became one of the most beloved characters to come out of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and his positronic brain made him incredibly unique, even in the futuristic world of Star Trek. Data was created by cyberneticist Dr. Noonian Soong , who spent his life in the pursuit of creating sentient artificial life.
Despite Data's obvious advantages in body and mind, he stated on more than one occasion that he would give it all up to be human. Throughout his time on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Data worked to learn as much as he could about humanity, exploring the depths of what his positronic brain was capable of. Dr. Soong created Data to be as human-like as possible, though he struggled to understand certain aspects of human behavior and did not experience emotions the way that humans do.
A positronic brain allows an android to achieve true sentience and become as close as possible to resembling a human. In Asimov's writing, the positronic brain was inextricably linked to the three laws of robotics, which state that a robot cannot harm a human, must obey human orders, and must protect itself. The Soong androids of Star Trek are not beholden to these laws, as Data's brother Lore, for example, commits many harmful acts and does not follow orders.
Data's Positronic Brain Explained Data's extremely advanced positronic brain had an 800 quadrillion-bit storage memory, with computational speeds of 60 trillion operations per second that could be accessed at a moment's notice. For example, when Captain Jean-Luc Picard first introduced Data to Sherlock Holmes, the android downloaded and memorized every story featuring Arthur Conan Doyle's detective.
Dr. Altan Soong continued the work of his father and built upon his ideas of positronic technology to create even more life-like golems in Star Trek: Picard. After Admiral Picard died due to residual Borg DNA in his brain, his consciousness was transferred to one of these golem bodies. Data also received an upgraded golem body and his consciousness was combined with those of his siblings and his positronic daughter, Lal . Although Data has been significantly upgraded since Dr.
