8/10 | Darkest Dungeon 2 A solid sequel to one of the best roguelike games of recent years, and one that personalises the conflict against Lovecraftian madness while adding to the original’s compelling turn-based battles.

The idea of there being a curse on indie sequels – where they all underperform, regardless of how popular the original was – started off mostly as a joke but now it’s reached a point where it’s become almost an accepted certainty. What makes it especially unfortunate is that in most cases the sequels are very good.

The plot continues from the original and its DLC, with the world being overtaken by the Lovecraftian horrors you were previously trying to keep at bay. Now they lurk everywhere, not just in the bowels of your family mansion, as you try to work your way towards a mysterious mountain that is the source of the evil. The tone is slightly more knowing than before though and while it’s not full-on camp, it is a bit more fun than the dour original.

Although the graphics are 3D, with some very nice animation, the battle system is still viewed from a 2D perspective, with your team on the left and the creatures from the abyss lining up politely on the right. The sequel may look the same at a quick glance, since it retains the same Mike Mignola style artwork of the original, but on a technical level this is quite a big step forward.

We’re simplifying things considerably as we explain this, as there is a legion of complications involving buffs and debuffs, equipment, weapons, character stats, personality conflicts, and a host of other individual elements. At first this all seems too much, until you begin to realise that what at first appeared to be just needless details are in fact the core of the game and what stops it from being just another turn-based role-player.
