Daniel Ricciardo may actually re-join AlphaTauri next season.
, Ricciardo is now one of a few drivers under consideration to fill any potentially vacant seats at AlphaTauri next season. That would likely mean replacing Nyck de Vries, the Formula E and Formula 2 champion that has struggled in his first season in F1.While
AlphaTauri is no longer directly considered a junior team for Red Bull as it often was when it was known as Scuderia Toro Rosso, the program has still typically chosen to hire only drivers that could reasonably develop into a long-term solution for the second seat at the company's senior program. While Lawson and Iwasa would fill that role, the 33-year-old Ricciardo would be the most strange hire in the history of the program.
All of this could be a moot point, however. Nyck de Vries has run just eight races with AlphaTauri. If he can start scoring points and impressing against his third-year teammate Yuki Tsunoda in the near future, Ricciardo may not have an open seat to fight for in the first place. That seat is not yet open, and Red Bull is not yet openly discussing its next choice.
If the move is made, the ultra-popular Australian veteran driver will at least give Red Bull and AlphaTauri an excellent benchmark for just how good their second team has become. Since the team has only employed younger and less experienced drivers, it has never made any real push to consistently win races. While the choice makes little sense for Ricciardo, it represents a chance for the team to move forward and become more than just the other program Red Bull owns.
