Hamlin was injured as the first quarter of the Jan. 2 game was ending, where he tackled Bengals receiver Tee Higgins, who rammed into Hamlin at high speed. In the collision, Higgins’ helmet appeared to strike Hamlin around the head and chest. By most accounts, it was not an especially noteworthy, or violent hit in the context of the NFL.
“We were all in a room crying, we were all in tears. I’m not a crier, but I’ve never cried so hard in my life, just to know my nephew basically died on the field and they brought him back to life,” Glenn said. Glenn recounted how the family spent all day and night by Hamlin’s side, including Hamlin’s mother who rode in the ambulance with her son., Glenn recounted that Hamlin was still in the Intensive Care Unit hooked up to a ventilator. It’d been a long day for Glenn, who said it felt like a “hurricane,” making the nearly five-hour-drive through pouring rain from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati, but that the family had no plans to stop until they reached Hamlin’s side.
Indianapolis Colts safety Rodney Thomas II, who also visited his friend and high school teammate in the hospital told reporters that he held Hamlin’s hand and spoke to him.
