The Dallas City Council unanimously approved a proposal pushed by the police department to create new restrictions on operating hours, which they say will help reduce violent crime in the city.
“A lot of us are going to be without jobs,” said Veronica Garza, a worker at Tiger Cabaret in Far East Dallas. That club operates from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., whose officials have argued that crimes and emergency calls occurring after 2 a.m. at some strip clubs tie up police and fire resources and hamper the city’s goal of reducing violent offenses.
The stats showed officers made close to 2,100 arrests either at or near sexually oriented businesses between 2019 and last year. About a third of the total — which includes violent crimes, such as aggravated assault and murder, as well as property crimes, such as burglaries and thefts — have occurred between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.
“We’re not shutting anybody down by this action we’re taking today,” he said. “We’re just saying the same thing that the nightlife establishments all across our city say every night and that is that at 2 a.m., the party’s over.” Angelica Batrez, who works as a hostess at XTC Cabaret in northwest Dallas, said being able to work through the night allows her to be more involved with her three children and financially support her mother.
