The Lovers Lane United Methodist Church sanctuary is filled on the night of Everybody’s Christmas.In 1980, at the age of 10, I met then-U.S. Sen. Nancy Kassebaum at a Fourth of July picnic. Although my only interest that day centered around the promise of hand-cranked ice cream, my grandmother dragged me to the event and ushered me into the dignitary’s receiving line.
It was during my sophomore year at SMU when one of those ministers asked me to help escort a group of sixth grade confirmands as they toured several Dallas-based Methodist sites like SMU, the Wesley Rankin Center, Six Flags , and Bryan’s Grace United Methodist Church. After we resumed standing, one of the sixth graders sheepishly asked Bill, “Aren’t you ever scared to come to work?”
