Euless is home to thousands from the Pacific Island nation, where a massive volcano exploded, causing shockwaves halfway around the world.“We’re hoping that this expo can generate some revenue to build homes for those affected,” Asaeli said.
Money raised through the campaign will go to Habitat for Humanity New Zealand, which has been working with partners in Tonga, according to a Wednesday news release. Viliami Va’inga Tone, representative of Tonga to the United Nations, will headline the expo’s Island Resilience Summit on Friday — “Earth Day” — at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in downtown Dallas. The expo will feature guest speaker panels and activities to spread awareness on clean energy and the environment. It is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
“We really wanted to find a moment to put the Tongan volcano eruption back on people’s radar,” said Matt Tranchin, senior vice president of impact for the nonprofit. Additionally, 40 students with Tongan heritage from Euless Trinity High School will attend the summit, some of whom will perform Sipi Tau, a Tongan war dance, as part of the event.
