The cast of The Lost Daughter had a happy reunion in New York, with Jessica Chastain joining the chorus of praise.
’s 2008 novel, was shot from September to October last year on the Greek island of Spetses. Colman plays a literature professor on holiday whose bubble of solitude is burst by a somewhat indelicate extended family of Greek Americans. Gyllenhaal explained how the book “shook her” because one minute you’re thinking, “oh, my God, this woman is so fucked up!” and the next, if you’re being honest with yourself, you find her sympathetic.
Instead Gyllenhaal pitched Colman on the gig, inviting her over to her place on the Fourth of July for lunch and “some bubbly.” The British actor, who apparently forgot that the day was an American holiday, said her knees were knocking because she was so thrilled at the prospect. But Gyllenhaal still described the afternoon as something of a “sell,” and after handshakes were made, she headed over to her mother’s place, where she had sent her two daughters for the day, feeling a little tipsy.
Dakota Johnson, who plays Colman’s maybe-friend/maybe-foe in the psychologically rich film, also met Gyllenhaal for a lunch that, she said, went very deep very quickly. Speaking the way actors do sometimes, she said Gyllenhaal offered her a chance to go scuba diving in Greece—“emotional scuba diving.”who plays a beach apartment caretaker, on board.
