COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 16-year-old girl was killed in her home early Wednesday morning when her father mistakenly thought she was an intruder and shot her, reports say. Janae Hairston, a junior at Canal Winchester High School, was shot in the garage of the family’s home on the city’s Southeast Side at about 4:30 a.m., police. The girl’s mother called 911 and told a dispatcher her husband thought their daughter was an intruder.WCMH Channel 4 reportsOfficials with Canal Winchester Schools said in a letter to parents that counselors will be available when students return from winter break.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and our thoughts, prayers, and support are with them,” the letter says,. “We are saddened by this tragic loss and will make every effort to help students and families cope.” The shooting remains under investigation. The Franklin County prosecutor’s office will review the case, the Dispatch reports.
