D-FW high schoolers took top honors at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, or ISEF, hosted in Dallas this week. Ninety Texas finalists,...

Other D-FW students took home second and fourth-place awards of $2000 and $500, respectively. They include Sarang Goel, Ethan Rebello, Zachary Li and Jayanth Pandit from the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science in Denton; Zehra Jaffery from Plano West Senior High School; and Harsh Singh from Marcus High School in Flower Mound.

Plano West Senior High school’s junior Alanna Polyak explains her project during Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center in Dallas. To test her hypothesis, she first mimicked multiple sclerosis-like symptoms in earthworms. Then she injected stem cells from planaria into the earthworms. When she saw that the earthworms’ cells were starting to fix themselves, she knew whom to share the good news with.

“I think just the process of starting alone is really important,” he said, “because slowly, you will grow.” Though balancing the research with her schoolwork was difficult, Nathan said, the experience has empowered her to keep asking scientific questions.
