Brock upended several established candidates, including state Rep. Kent Smith.
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cuyahoga County Democrats on Saturday elected David Brock, a West Side organizer and activist, to become its next chair, an upset victory in a series of big changes to Democratic politics in Northeast Ohio.
The others in the contest included state Rep. Juanita Brent of Cleveland, former Shaker Heights City Councilman Rob Zimmerman and Ernie Harris, a retired educator and grassroots activist. Brock largely built his campaign off of organizing he had already done at the local level. In 2020, he and other organizers recruited between 200 and 250 volunteers to knock doors for then-Democratic nominee Joe Biden in several Cleveland wards as well as Bay Village. In each of the wards he operated, Democrats grew their vote share over 2016, despite Republican then-President Donald Trump matching his 8-percentage point victory.
Instead of going immediately to a second round of voting, candidates were given the option to drop from the race. Zimmerman, Brent and Harris all bowed out, throwing their support behind Brock. Following his election, Brent was nominated as vice-chair and set to face off against Richmond Heights Mayor Kim Thomas, Smith’s choice as running mate. Thomas bowed out, clearing the way for Brent to take the spot.
Brown’s 2021 primary election against former state Sen. Nina Turner left many Democrats in the county upset with her performance as chair, feeling she let the party slip by the wayside to focus on her own career. Democratic turnout for the 2022 primary was the lowest it has been in two decades.
