Does RTA have enough equipment to handle a potential increase in usage? When RTA overhauled its bus route system last summer as part of its “NEXT GEN” plan, it offered free fares across all services for one week, resulting in a 13% spike in ridership. “What we cannot do is make RTA free and make it open for any and everyone without payment, and then not look at what the ramifications of that are,” she said. “The expectation is to make it safe, to make it clean, to make it go everywhere, but we’ve got to pay for it. We are a public agency, but at the core, we are a business, and we’ve got to be able to have a bottom line...”
