New report says housing will be a key election issue in marginal Greater Manchester seats
NIMBY opponents of house-building in the South East tend to grab the headlines, but in Greater Manchester there's a housing crisis that's every bit as real and which experts say is holding back the region.
The Plan for More and Better Homes sets out how a new government could turbocharge housing delivery across the country and provide real levelling up to some of the UK’s poorest areas. One in three of these projects are in areas such as Manchester city centre, Salford and Oldham, ranked in the 10% most deprived in England.
The Ancoats Dispensary in Manchester is seen as an example of an essential development which the plan could help bring to life. But HFTN says without action from national and local policymakers, much-needed housing projects like this are likely to falter. The report calls for a "policy environment that will see public money spent to make the biggest possible impact", such as long term rent and grant certainty for housing associations to avoid funding gaps - and changes to local plans so they're explicitly linked to local economic activity.
