With 14 vulnerabilities confirmed in the first week following launch, just how secure should Windows 11 users be feeling?
Security experts offer a critical evaluation of Windows 11 security
John Shier, a senior security advisor at Sophos, says that"while Microsoft has attempted to raise the security floor of their latest operating system by making some settings mandatory and adding new technologies, they still have a burden to support many legacy applications and provide backwards compatibility." Of course, such backwards compatibility requires legacy code.
The endless security patches that every Windows user, regardless of version, has to keep up with don't look like a thing of the past then. However, Mat Clothier, the CEO at Cloudhouse, says that, in some ways, this was more likely as the release schedule for 11 was shorter than previous major Windows versions."This highlights the need to patch constantly, but also the caution required before adopting new releases," Clothier says.
"The fact that the zero-day hasn't been exploited yet on Windows 11 based systems isn't a surprise," says Bert Steppé, a senior researcher in tactical defence at F-Secure. One possible reason, he says, is that the vulnerability is more difficult to exploit thanks to internal OS security improvements.
