Ahead of Monday morning’s meeting, Rev. Dave Welch, president of the Texas Pastor Council, wrote to the State Board of Education warning him that the council was strongly opposed to the social studies curriculum as drafted. The council hassince its 2003 founding, and it presented Gov. Greg Abbott with its “Faithful Citizenship Award” in 2013.

Welch said the group is frustrated that Moses was not included as an historical figure in the curriculum, that middle school students will be expected to learn about historical civil rights efforts for gay people and that ethnic studies curriculum includes “concepts of ‘intersectionality,’ LGBT rights, Critical Race Theory , and describes border security as the ‘militarization of the U.S. Mexico border.
