Crazy Mystery of Jupiter’s Stunning Color Changes Finally Solved? — Researchers have used NASA |
Images from a ground-based infra-red telescope, showing Jupiter at 5 micron wavelength radiation. The remarkable change between May 2001 and December 2011 in the North Equatorial Belt can be seen. Credit: Arrate Antuñano/NASA/IRTF/NSFCam/SpeX’s changing stripes could be caused by torsional oscillations in the planet’s magnetic field. These wave-like motions may bridge the understanding gap between Jupiter’s surface phenomena and its deep interior, but further research is needed.

Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech Scientists already know the changing appearance of Jupiter is somehow linked to infrared variations about 50 km below the gas giant’s surface, and this fresh research has shown that these variations could in turn be caused by waves produced by the planet’s magnetic field, deep within its interior.
The Juno spacecraft arrived at Jupiter in July 2016, after a nearly five-year journey from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. Credit: NASA The work was led by Dr.
