The Consumer Product Safety Commission places rules and regulations on products for sale in the U.S. In rare cases, the CPSC issues a ban on dangerous products.

“This is a hidden hazard,” Richard Trumka Jr., an agency commissioner, told Bloomberg. “Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned.”“CPSC has not proposed any regulatory action on gas stoves at this time,” she said in a statement to Scripps News. “Any regulatory action by the Commission would involve a lengthy process.

“It is both a climate and a health concern,” Lebel said. “We know that methane is a strong greenhouse gas. It is 80 times stronger than carbon dioxide over a 20-year lifespan. We need to do all we can to reduce methane emissions from all sources. Natural gas is one of the contributors to methane emissions in the U.S. We’re finding it can be leaked from the appliances themselves; it is not just the production of natural gas and the transmission.

“There are other gasses that are harmful to human health and even the combustion of the gas. That is another thing that we’re getting more research on,” Lebel said. To combat household health concerns, Lebel said that users can use alternative cooking methods, such as a crockpot, that plugs into an outlet. He also recommends increasing ventilation near stoves, which can be done using a vent hood or opening windows.
