COVID: Santa Clara County plans to end indoor mask mandate next week — but not for everyone
One more week and the masks can come off inside restaurants, stores and other indoor places in Santa Clara County, which has been the last bastion in the Bay Area and one of the last in California to lift the mandate .
Both developments reflect a widespread loosening of public health orders across the region and state as the latest surge of COVID-19 is showing signs of receding with the gradual waning of the omicron variant. “We are on track,” County Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody said, “And given the steady decline in cases that we continue to see, I’m confident we’ll be able to lift the masking requirement on March 2.”
As of Thursday, the county’s seven-day average number of COVID-19 cases dropped to 504, with 262 people currently receiving treatment for the virus in hospitals. To officially remove the mask mandate, the county must stay below a moving seven-day average of 550 cases until March 2.“Personally, I believe it’s too soon,” said KP Eugenio, who works at San Jose’s Caravan Lounge on Almaden Avenue. “I do get that now it’s just a personal choice thing. The virus is still running rampant.
