COVID case counts have increased in Alabama in each of the last six weeks, after hitting record-low levels in the early spring.

COVID cases continue to rise slowly in Alabama, and hospitalizations inched upwards, as the state closed out the week by adding more than 1,000 cases on Friday.

That marks the first time the state has added at least 1,000 cases in a single day since March 2, according to data from theClick here.Cases remain well below where they were this winter, when the omicron variant pushed the state’s case counts to unheard of levels. Back in January, there was a week when Alabama added more than 116,000 new cases.

Still, case counts have increased in Alabama in each of the last six weeks, after hitting record-low levels in the early spring. The state’s 7-day average for new cases reached 650 on Friday, the highest it’s been since March. The current wavelet isn’t as steep or as big as the omicron surge, which hit near vertical ascension in a short time frame back in December of 2021 and January of 2022. Friday’s 7-day average represents a 175% increase over the number from one month ago.

Hospitalizations also remain relatively low, while still increasing. The state reported 125 COVID hospitalizations as of Friday, up from 100 a week ago. That number was in the 50s earlier in the spring., this mini wave seems to be spreading out slightly, with counties across the state reporting relatively high positivity rates and case rates per capita. You can see current case counts, case rates and positivity rates for each county in the map below.
