For comparison, Pennsylvania’s statewide average positivity rate was as low as 8.3% on Oct. 25, and had dipped to 1.1% on July 4, just before the start of the present wave, according to tracking by SpotlightPA.As of Thursday, Monroe County had Pennsylvania’s highest positivity rate, 32%. Lebanon County was close behind, with 31.3%. York, Adams and Perry counties also had among the ten highest rates in the state.
Hospitalizations fell slightly last week, with hospitals caring for an average of 4,696 COVID-19 patients per day, about 150 per day fewer than the previous week. For comparison, Pennsylvania’s previous worst surge peaked with about 12,670 daily infections on Dec. 1, 2020. Pennsylvania hospitals are already severely stressed. The present daily average of hospitalized COVID-19 patients is about 1,500 less than the all-time peak that came just after Christmas of 2020.
