Alexander Demetroudis, 49, claimed that he had been provoked by his own mental illness and the effect of medications he was taking at the time of the offenses.

A Jersey City man who admitted viciously assaulting a woman while robbing her and then attempting to rape her will spend at least seven more years in prison after an appellate court panel rejected his arguments for a more lenient sentence.

In a 14-page decision, the appellate court panel dismantled the argument, saying “provocation is based on the behavior or acts of the victim, not based on a medical condition or medications being taken by the defendant.” A week later in Hoboken, he smashed a 31-year-old woman’s head into the sidewalk while robbing her. She was ringing her boyfriend’s doorbell when he attacked her from behind.

Demetroudis claimed in his appeal that he was under the influence of medications he was taking for his bipolar disorder at the time of the crimes. But he failed to note in his argument that he was also under the influence of cocaine and alcohol at the time.
